Greetings from Centre for Peace and Development Initiatives, (CPDI)

Nothing but deafening silence from Punjab so far as implementation of Punjab Transparency and Right to Information Act 2013 is concerned. The time-limit of the important milestone of designating Public Information Officers within sixty days is going to expire on February 10 but no PIOs have been designated so far. There is no time limit for establishing Punjab Information Commission and neither anything is being done in this regard. Centre for Peace and Development Initiatives, (CPDI) has been demanding the establishment of Punjab Information Commission from the government of Punjab but so far no Information Commissioner has been appointed. In fact, no search committee has been established to recruit Information Commissioners. In sharp contrast, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has taken proactive steps, the office of the commission is functioning, Chief Information Commissioner has been appointed and summary containing names of two remaining Information Commissioners has been sent to the Chief Commissioner. The moment CM will sign the summary, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Commission will be established and after framing of rules and regulations, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Right to Information Act 2013 will get into implementation phase. At that time, the din of RTI in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will be inversely proportional to deafening silence in Punjab if the Punjab government persists with feet-dragging on this issue.
