Editorial:

Greetings from Centre for Peace and Development Initiatives.

We hear that Chief Minister of Punjab has approved the budget for Punjab Information Commission. It took Chief Minister nine months to approve budget for the PIC which indicates the level of his commitment for the cause of transparency and right to information, his frequent references to good governance and transparency notwithstanding. PIC, however, has performed well despite budgetary constraints and according to a news report, Punjab Information Commission has decided 185 complaints out of a total of 480 complaints received so far. Similarly, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Commission has received 175 complaints so far and 100 complaints have been decided.

We contacted Barrister Zafar Ullah, Secretary, Ministry of Law and Justice to seek information about the enactment of federal right to information law repealing Freedom of Information Ordinance 2002. To the question as to when was the bill going to be tabled in the National Assembly, he could not mention any specific time-frame but said that he was ‘trying to push’, which is suggestive of the fact that the federal government does not accord priority to the enactment of right to information law.

Happy reading,
